Kogarasu-maru – The “Little Crow” Sword of Ancient Japan

Kogarasu-maru (小烏丸), meaning “Little Crow”, is one of the most legendary and historically significant swords in Japan. Forged in the 8th to 9th century (early Heian period), it represents a rare transitional form between the straight Chinese-style chokutō and the curved Japanese tachi.

🔧 Unique Design:

  • Blade Length: ~62.8 cm (similar to a modern tachi)

  • Blade Type: Kissaki-Moroha-Zukuri – a very rare double-edged Japanese sword style

  • Shape: The back half of the blade has a single edge, while the tip is double-edged, blending a straight sword profile with gentle curvature

  • Significance: Combines features of both ancient Chinese and emerging Japanese sword styles — a one-of-a-kind hybrid

🏯 Historical Significance:

  • Attributed to: Legendary swordsmith Amakuni, though the sword has no signature

  • Legacy: Once held by the powerful Taira clan (Heike), including Taira no Kiyomori

  • Cultural Status: Seen as a symbol of Japan’s early swordcraft evolution and martial heritage

📖 Modern Influence:

Kogarasu-maru has inspired:

  • Video games and anime (e.g., Touken Ranbu)

  • Modern replica swords and collectible pieces

  • Academic interest as a bridge between Chinese and Japanese weapon design

🇯🇵 Why It Matters:

For anyone interested in sword history, craftsmanship, or Japanese culture, Kogarasu-maru is a milestone in the evolution of the Japanese sword — both artistically and technically. It’s not just a weapon; it’s a piece of living history.
